FERRUM, Va. (WFXR) – On July 2, NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas announced the addition of women’s flag football as a conference-sponsored sport in 2025-26.

The league will have at least six member institutions in its inaugural season, including Emmanuel University, Ferrum College, Chowan University, King’s University, Lees-McRae College and the University of Mount Olive.

“Conference Carolinas is thrilled to lead the way and become the first NCAA Division II conference to sponsor women’s flag football,” said Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin. “With the strong support of the National Football League (NFL), the sport is growing at the youth, high school and college levels. We are excited to be at the forefront of providing women across the country with another phenomenal competitive opportunity.”

In 2024-25, 10 NCAA institutions will compete in three divisions, and at the NAIA level, 24 institutions will participate in women’s flag football.

The average roster size is approximately 25 players who will play 7-on-7. A contest will be played over four 12-minute quarters on an 80×40 yard field. The offense has four attempts to cross each 20-yard line for a first down with a punt option on third down. Failure to do so results in the teams giving possession to their opponent.

Teams score six points for a touchdown and can earn one or two additional points for a play made from the five or ten yard lines. Players will wear securely fastened flag belts with sockets and two pop flags on each side of their hips.
