Everything you need to know about the cancellation of ITV’s Douglas series

Everything you need to know about the cancellation of ITV’s Douglas series

Douglas Is Cancelled is a four-part comedy-drama about cancel culture, set in the world of television news, starring Hugh Bonneville and Karen Gillan.

The series follows news anchor Douglas Bellowes (Hugh Bonneville), a “national treasure”, who tells a sexist joke at a wedding, leaving viewers wondering if his broadcasting career is over.

However, Douglas Is Cancelled creator Steven Moffat recently revealed that audiences watching at home won’t find out what Douglas said until the end of the season, according to Radio Times.

He explained: “The funny thing about it is that we don’t know what he actually said until the end. So we can decide (down the road) whether to cancel it or not.”

“It’s a hot topic, and isn’t it funny that everyone has the exact same opinion, really? Everyone wants to cancel someone.”

What is Douglas Is Cancelled on ITV about?

Douglas Is Cancelled introduces us to “Grizzling, middle-aged newsreader Douglas Bellowes, a respected presenter and raconteur who loves the life he has created with his newspaper editor wife, Sheila (Alex Kingston),” ITV explains.

“Although he’s an experienced presenter for Live At Six, Douglas surprisingly needs constant reassurance behind the scenes from his younger, more tech-savvy and social media-savvy co-presenter Madeline (Karen Gillan), who seems to be able to wrap him around her little finger.

“His life is privileged because he is considered a national treasure and seemingly can do no wrong, until he makes an ill-advised joke at his cousin’s wedding, which is overheard by another guest, who threatens to expose his comments on social media.”

The broadcaster added: “Speculation is rife and, in the current hysteria and digital storm, Douglas’ alleged indiscretion is being dissected, analysed and exaggerated.

“Everyone seems to have an opinion and Douglas is struggling to escape the controversy. It’s a chaotic and unmanageable situation, but can Douglas count on the support of his agent and colleagues? What will Douglas do next?”
