Caught on camera: Dog starts Colorado Springs house fire | News

Firefighters say a curious puppy was the cause of a small fire that broke out at a southeast Colorado Springs home last week — and the incident was caught on camera.

On June 26, shortly before 5 a.m., the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a home in the 1600 block of Rushmore Drive after the homeowners reported they had put out a stove fire.

Firefighters learned that the residents’ Apple Home Pod had alerted them to the fire by sending a high heat notification.

After a quick look at the owner’s security footage, firefighters determined that the family dog had started the fire by accidentally lighting the stove, which had cardboard boxes on it.

The video, later shared by firefighters on social media, shows the dog’s paw brushing the handle after standing on its hind legs to sniff the stove. Seconds later, the fire broke out and the room filled with smoke, setting off multiple fire alarms.

Firefighters said the owner, a man, was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation; no other injuries or animal injuries were reported.

In addition to the video, firefighters provided the following fire safety tips:

  • Place working smoke detectors inside and outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home

  • Keep all combustibles away from stoves and ovens

  • Know two ways out of every room in case of fire.
