Culpeper Regional Airport hosts Warbird Showcase, featuring flights in World War II aircraft

CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Capital Wing will visit Culpeper Regional Airport in mid-July for an expanded version of its Warbird Showcase.

The free event featuring iconic aircraft will take place at the airport, located at Beverly Ford Road at Routes 15/29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13 and 14, according to a news release from Capital Wing CAF.

Several unique aircraft will be on display at the event. According to the press release, these will include a Japanese Fuji LM-1, of which only three exist. Also on display will be the world’s first jet helicopter, a French Alouette II and a Vultee BT-13, which is currently undergoing restoration.

Twice a day, at 11:00 and 15:00, the Capital Wing TBM Avenger torpedo bomber will perform an engine run-up and fold and unfold its wings.

“The sound (of the engine) is impressive and the sight of the wings folding is incredible,” the statement read.

In addition, flights will be offered on World War II warplanes, including a Boeing PT-17 Stearman open-cabin biplane. According to the release, these flights can be booked in advance for a special discounted price valid only for the Warbird Showcase. All unsold attractions will be sold onsite during the showcase.

Participants will also be able to tour a vintage Douglas DC-3 twin-engine airliner for a small fee. The plane was considered the “state of the art aircraft” in the 1940s.

According to the release, the Capital Wing will also offer a limited number of special coupons during the presentation. Old House Vineyards, located just 7 miles from the airport’s runway, will offer a free beer or wine in exchange for said coupons.

“The Capital Wing is about more than just warplanes,” Pete Ballard, Capital Wing’s airplane ride coordinator, said in the release. “We strive to educate the public about the history of aviation, which during World War II included beer. Beer was a staple for American pilots during World War II. It was not uncommon for American pilots to load warm beer into one of their planes and fly up to 6,000 feet, where the air temperature is about 30 degrees, providing the crew with a nice cold beer after landing.”

Attendees will also be able to grab a bite to eat at the Law Dawgs food truck, which will offer a variety of food and drinks, including hot dogs and fries.

Free on-site parking will be available for event attendees.
