Speeding Risks on Minnesota County Roads

Hear that barking noise? Yep, it’s the heatwave calling Minnesotans to enjoy the warm weather. Summer also means more morons on the area’s roads, some on two wheels, some on four. Recently, a Chisago County driver was cited for speeding over 100 mph.

Freedom doesn’t mean being fast and furious. Even Benjamin Franklin would frown at this driver! When your driving endangers the safety of other drivers, it’s up to us to handle the situation. This driver had to face the consequences of his poor decisions.

Slow down. Obey the speed limit. Protect yourself and others.

The photo from the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office is a little hard to read, but it shows that their radar detected the vehicle stopped in front of the patrol car going 106 miles per hour.

Driving at this speed is VERY dangerous on county roads and motorways. Not only is it dangerous for other motorists on the road, but if something steps on the road in front of a car going at this speed, it can be fatal not only to what is in the path of that car, but also to the occupants of the vehicle.

According to the Minnesota Office of Highway Safety, so far in 2024, there have been 205 traffic fatalities, up from 162 a year ago. In fact, in 2023, Minnesota’s total traffic fatalities were 411, which puts us about halfway to last year’s total.

Speaking of our presence on Minnesota roads this holiday week, there are new unmarked pickup trucks on Minnesota roads that are enforcing distracted driving.

As dangerous driving habits continue to be a major problem on Minnesota roadways, the Office of Highway Safety (OTS) is getting creative to help our law enforcement partners change these behaviors before they lead to a crash.

The OTS has awarded a total of $912,000 to law enforcement to purchase 13 specialized vans, which will allow officers to enforce traffic from a higher vantage point. This will give them a better view of drivers who are distracted, not wearing seat belts or engaging in other dangerous driving behaviors.
