Georgia community shocked by firefighter deaths

LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. — The Liberty County community expressed shock after Tennessee authorities recovered the bodies of two missing firefighters.

The bodies of Liberty County firefighters Raegan Anderson and Chandler Kuhbander were discovered in Cocke County, Tennessee, on June 30, according to the Hinesville Police DepartmentThe couple had been missing since June 24.

Many community members shared the feeling of the worst possible outcome and wished it had been different, WSAV reported.

“Everybody wanted the best possible outcome for him and for her, for both of them,” said an employee at Rodeo Mexican Restaurant, located across the street from the fire station where Kuhbander and Anderson worked. “Everybody was shocked and devastated by what was happening. We just didn’t know how to react. Everyone was really sad.”

According to police reports, Anderson had a history of suicidal thoughts and had been arrested days before his disappearance.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency in the investigation. While it has not confirmed the cause of death, it said the investigation is ongoing.

State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey said more people have died in fires this year than in all of 2023.
