How Dumb and Dumber Inspired Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to Get Publicly Affectionate

There is no such thing as a stupid idea, but a Dumb and even dumber the idea is another story. That’s what Travis Kelce learned when he suggested to his girlfriend Taylor Swift that he sneaks on stage during his Eras Tour world tour for a cameo.

“I told Tay about it first,” Travis said. Jason Kelcehis brother and co-host, in the last episode of their New heights podcast, released Wednesday. “I thought, ‘It would be funny if I rode one of the bikes during the 1989 time?'”

The idea of course evolved into a tuxedo- and top-hatted Travis lifting Swift up on stage after her performance of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and joining in the pantomimed performance before “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” on June 23 at Swift’s third London show. The onstage appearance is a first for Travis in particular, and for all Swift lovers. As Swift used to say, welcome to the stage… my boyfriend!

In the podcast, Travis said Swift asked him if he would be “seriously up for doing something like that.”

“I thought, ‘What? I would love to do that, are you kidding me? I’ve seen enough of the show, I might as well get to work here,’” he said. “And of course, she found the perfect role for me to be in.”

It turned out that riding a bike wasn’t the ideal solution, “in case I crashed into someone else or one of the dancers or whatever,” Travis said. “It was the safest option.”

Instead, he appeared alongside Swift, the “real showman,” in a sequence that can be interpreted as symbolically significant, while being less physically problematic for the dancers and Travis, who probably shouldn’t be at risk of injury before his next season as a professional football player either. Look, everyone needs a side hustle these days, and the NFL is it.

Travis called it an “honor” and “true pleasure” to perform with Swift, not to mention the explosive reaction from the audience to her appearance.

“When everybody found out it was me — because it took a second for everybody to find out — it was a pretty shocking moment,” he said. “I was like, ‘Oh shit.’ And you don’t realize how big that fucking stage is. It’s easily the size of a football stadium… it’s way bigger than I could have ever imagined.”

That’s not to say he wasn’t nervous, though he noted that “you can’t do wrong with Taylor on stage, she’s absolutely, she’s the best at doing it.” Travis’ inner monologue, however, warned him otherwise.

“The only thing I told myself was don’t drop the baby,” he said. “Don’t drop that. Don’t drop Taylor on your way to that damn couch. The golden rule was don’t drop Taylor, get her to the couch safely.”

And, in keeping with the brand for a guy who was immortalized in song for his love of Grand Theft Auto And American PieTravis revealed that he drew inspiration from another key element of the ’90s canon for his performance: Dumb and even dumberHe tried to channel Jim Carreythe film’s tap dancing, which is so enthusiastically received in the film Jeff Daniels as Travis did in front of the London audience. Travis is only missing the orange tuxedo.

“I always wanted to do this move, but I never knew when I should do it, where it made sense,” Travis said of the energetic routine. “This is one of my favorite moves of all time!”

He said it was “the perfect time for me to go out there, pretend to be an amateur and have some fun.”
