Prince Harry has targeted the royal family on several occasions. But he has notably tried to send a “symbolic message” to the royal family, according to an expert.

Harry and his wife Meghan stepped down as working royals in 2020 and moved to California. They have since leveled a number of criticisms of members of the monarchy — in their interview with Oprah, in the Netflix docuseries and in their tell-all memoir Spare.

For their part, the royals have chosen to ignore the scandal. But King Charles made the decision to evict Harry and Meghan from Frogmore Cottage because they were living abroad – a decision that reportedly brought tears to his youngest son’s eyes.

Harry appeared to hint at his dismay earlier this year when he first filed paperwork listing the US as his country of residence. The change date was listed as June 29, 2023 – the same day Buckingham Palace confirmed the Sussexes had left their previous UK residence.

Royal commentator Esther Krakue told Sky Australia News Royal Report Programme: “It is very interesting that Prince Harry has chosen to date his official residence in the United States from the day he was evicted from Frogmore Cottage.”

She added: “I think he was trying to send a message and it was very symbolic and I think the most important message here is that this represents everything that could have been and isn’t and has been lost. Potentially, it represents what should never have been.”

In an interview with Good Morning America in February, Will Reeve asked Prince Harry if he was enjoying life in the United States. “It’s incredible,” the Duke of Sussex replied. “I love every day.”

When asked if he felt American, Prince Harry laughed and replied: “Do I feel American? Um, no. I don’t know how I feel.” Harry said he had “considered” becoming a U.S. citizen, but that it was not a “top priority.”
