Greer Citizen Announces Closing By End of Month

GREER, SC (WSPA) – The Greer Citizen, Greer’s central newspaper, announced Wednesday that it will cease operations. Its final edition will be published on July 31.

“It is with deep regret and great sadness that we inform you that the Greer Citizen will cease operations at the end of this month,” said William Buchheit, editor of the Greer Citizen. “The national decline of print journalism and the community’s shift from newspaper advertising to online media have made financial sustainability impossible, leading us to make this inevitable decision.”

The Greer Citizen was founded on May 10, 1918, originally as a family business.

The newspaper was then purchased in September 2006 by Buchheit News Management, a family-owned company in Spartanburg.
