“Maple” is sweet, silly and ready for adoption in Billings

After a week’s hiatus, Wet Nose Wednesday returned to the airwaves this week on Townsquare Media – Billings, and our featured adoptable pet from Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter is a bundle of joy.

Meet Maple, a Pointer mix.

Maple came to YVAS as a stray. She is a six year old pointer mix and when she arrived in our studio today she lit up the room with her energy and personality. For a six year old she acts like a much younger dog and is very friendly.

Maple is ready for adoption now at the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter.

Unlike some of the energetic dogs we’ve met, Maple is also quite gentle. Derek Wulf, the shelter’s humane outreach coordinator, told us Maple may be partially deaf, but her disability doesn’t seem obvious. Wulf said dogs rely heavily on visual cues, and Maple’s training shouldn’t be any more difficult than training any other dog.

Free adoptions continue until July 7 at YVAS.

Two weeks ago, the Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter reached critical capacity. Every kennel and cage was filled to the brim. To encourage adoptions, the shelter waived ALL FEE to adopt any pet. Puppies, adult dogs, kittens, and cats… adoptees could take home a new pet for ZERO dollars.

The number of strays at the shelter has stabilized somewhat, but an influx of strays typically occurs every July 4th holiday, when dozens of dogs and cats escape from fences and run free because of the noise. The shelter is continuing its FREE ADOPTIONS for all animals through July 7.

Thank you, Billings, for a record number of adoptions.

Here’s a heartening statistic: from June 22 to July 2, the shelter welcomed 152 pet adoptions! You can view the list of animals currently available for adoption at YVAS here. Don’t forget to get your pets microchipped ($20, no appointment required) and keep your information up to date.

If your dog runs away during the 4th of July holiday, check with the shelter to see if he or she has been rescued. Thank you to Shipton’s Big R for supporting pet adoption in the Billings area.
