Fantastic Four Characters Inspired Mega Minions? Here’s What We Know

The connection between Despicable Me 4 and the Fantastic Four

While we are talking about Gladiator, Joker, Wicked and many other big budget movies, who would have thought that Despicable Me 4 would come along and steal their spotlight for a moment? The buzz surrounding the fourth installment of the iconic franchise is justified considering that Minions: The Awakening of Gru has grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office. The franchise is now taking a new turn in history with the fourth film hitting the big screen on July 3, 2024. While there is a lot packed into a movie that is just over 90 minutes long, the world will be fascinated to see the Mega Minions, a secret group of 5 Minions who have superpowers but have no idea what to do with them. The internet was obsessed with the fact that they were inspired by Marvel’s Fantastic Four, and it turns out they weren’t wrong.

What’s the buzz around Mega Minions?

In Despicable Me 4, we meet a new team of five Mega Minions who have incredible powers but no responsibilities. Two of these five Mega Minions resemble two very important characters from the Fantastic Four: The Thing and Mr. Fantastic. One of the Minions has a rocky body, and the other has the superpower of being extremely stretchy and flexible. For the uninitiated, the Fantastic Four are Marvel’s First Family, a group of individuals who gained their superpowers after being exposed to cosmic radiation. While The Thing has a rocky body and superhuman strength, Mr. Fantastic can stretch his body to any length and shape.

Despicable Me 4 directors Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the same topic. They talked about the Minions era, the search for a master, and the need to change that technique. They then explained what inspired them to draw inspiration from the Fantastic Four. “I know for me, I was really thinking about simple, very graphic, easy-to-understand powers. We talked about a lot of things, but I think given the screen time that we had, which wasn’t a lot, we went for very archetypal powers, in the vein and the look of the Fantastic Four,” Renaud added.

“Their powers aren’t exactly Fantastic Four, but one thing I like about that group is that the Fantastic Four’s powers are slightly goofy… The Invisible Woman, the fire guy, the rock guy, there’s something special about them. It works really well as a comic, but the visual and graphic sensibility of those powers really lent itself to the Minions,” he added.
