CapMetro offering free rides on the 4th of July after 5 p.m.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Happy Independence Day!


Those seeking a ride to the City of Austin’s annual Fourth of July orchestra performance and fireworks show can utilize CapMetro’s services for free Thursday evening. The Austin transit authority will waive all service fares after 5 p.m., with multiple routes transporting customers to the Star Spangled Fest at Auditorium Shores.

Bus services will operate on Sunday-level offerings, with Saturday-level rail services. CapMetro officials confirmed in a release there won’t be any UT, Night Owl or Express services available Thursday.

While some road detours are planned in downtown Austin, here are the bus routes that will take guests to Auditorium Shores on Thursday:

  • Bus Route 1: North Lamar/South Congress
  • Bus Route 3: Burnet/Menchaca
  • Bus Route 7: Duval/Dove Springs
  • Bus Route 10: South First/Red River
  • Bus Route 20: Manor Road/Riverside
  • Bus Route 30: Barton Creek Square
  • Rapid Route 801: North Lamar/South Congress
  • Rapid Route 803: Burnet/South Lamar

Customers can use CapMetro’s Trip Planner tool to coordinate their route plans.

Those needing to travel north of Lady Bird Lake after the fireworks show must head to Lavaca and Fourth streets to pick up bus services. For those looking to travel south of the river post-event, they can go to the following stops:

  • Routes 1, 10 and 801: Congress Avenue and Barton Springs Road
  • Routes 7 and 20: Riverside Drive and Congress Avenue
  • Routes 3, 30 and 803: Cesar Chavez Street and West Avenue

The last buses will depart at 10:30 p.m. Regular service levels will resume on Friday.
