Farmers Market Coupons Available to Low-Income Seniors in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – Farmers market coupon books are now available to low-income seniors, the Illinois Department of Aging (IDoA) and Human Services (IDHS) announced Tuesday.

The Farmers Market Nutrition Program for Seniors provides access to fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from local farmers. Each booklet contains five $10 checks.

“The Farmers Market Nutrition for Seniors Program helps low-income seniors supplement their diets with fresh, seasonal produce,” said Mary Killough, IDoA interim director. “What’s great about this program, beyond its nutritional benefits, is that it also helps support Illinois farmers and local food economies.”

Checks will be distributed prior to the program start date on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be used between July 10 and October 31 at participating SFMNP vendors, a list of which will be provided to program members. Participating farmers markets and roadside stands are also marked with a yellow sign with black letters that says “Farmers Market Nutrition Program Benefits Accepted Here.”

“Food insecurity affects all ages, but particularly seniors on fixed incomes,” said Melanie Kluzek, IDHS administrator of special nutrition and commodity programs. “For people with chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables can have a positive impact on their health.”

Program participants must be at least 60 years old, with a monthly income of $2,322 for a single-person household or a monthly income of $3,151 for a two-person household. Eligible individuals are encouraged to contact their local agency on aging for application instructions.
