English referee Anthony Taylor stormed out of the Stuttgart Arena on Friday after German staff reacted furiously to his decision not to award them a penalty in Spain’s 2-1 win over the Euro 2024 hosts, according to reports.

In booking their place in the semi-finals against France on Tuesday, Spain eliminated Germany from the tournament in extra time thanks to Mikel Merino’s 119th-minute winner after Florian Wirtz’s late strike in normal time cancelled out Dani Olmo’s opener.

The decisive moment of this exciting match came in the first half of extra time, when Jamal Musiala’s long-range shot hit the Spanish defender’s hand Marc Cucurella.

Despite impassioned appeals from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, Taylor chose not to award a penalty in a decision that was supported by video assistant referee Stuart Attwell.

According to German newspaper Bild, Nagelsmann’s assistant coach Sandro Wagner was seen bursting into Taylor’s dressing room after the match and was heard “loudly insulting” the referee.

The German players immediately appealed to Taylor to award a penalty, but it was not awarded.

Just over an hour after the final whistle, Taylor was pictured in a black Mercedes leaving the stadium.

The newspaper, visibly angry at Taylor’s decision, claimed the referee “fled” the stadium because of it and pointed out that it was “interesting” that he did not stay to explain his decision.

Nagelsmann said after the match, furious: “It was not deserved today and the referee whistled a little in favour of Spain. It was a clear penalty.”

“When the ball is clearly heading towards goal, the Spaniard stops the ball with his hand. He doesn’t do it on purpose, but it doesn’t matter.”

“The penalty we won against Denmark was much less serious. I don’t understand why it wasn’t assessed, when there were 48,000 replays.”

Germany’s fury has been compared to Jose Mourinho’s anger at Taylor after Roma’s Europa League final defeat to Sevilla in 2023.

Mourinho was furious at Taylor’s ‘stupid’ decisions in his eyes

Mourinho branded the England referee a “fucking disgrace” for making “shit” decisions after the match and confronted him in an extraordinary row at the Puskas Arena.

Waiting for him in the car park, Mourinho told Taylor “fuck off” and called him a “fucking disgrace” before heading towards the team minibus.

Mourinho’s native Portugal were knocked out of Euro 2024 on penalties after a bitter defeat by Germany, with Joao Felix missing the decisive penalty in the quarter-final.
