Youngkin Announces Agreement With Virginia Universities to Protect Veterans’ Benefits

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Gov. Glenn Younkin recently announced that colleges and universities have agreed to protect veterans’ benefits ahead of a voting program in July.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday that leaders of Virginia’s public colleges and universities have agreed to take steps to ensure that no student is negatively impacted by the July 18 vote on changes to the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP).

Due to the time lag between now and the passage and signing of the two bills to repeal and reverse the changes to VMSDEP tuition waiver eligibility, veterans have expressed concern about the changes to their benefits.

“I look forward to the House and Senate returning on July 18 as announced and sending to my desk HB 6004 and SB 6012, which completely repeal the harmful language, without qualifications or conditions, and provide a total of $65 million in each year of the biennium for this important program,” Youngkin said.
