Chicago armed robbery video: Contractors robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight while working in East Garfield Park

CHICAGO (WLS) — Two armed robbers attacked contractors as they worked on the West Side in a brazen armed robbery caught on camera.

“I was shocked, honestly,” said Cynthia Bednarz, who lives in East Garfield Park. “I’ve lived here for 24 years and we’ve never had anything like this happen in our neighborhood. We’re a tight-knit community.”

The crime happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 2700 block of West Washington Boulevard. It was captured in its entirety by a security camera installed on the doorbell.

The footage shows a 61-year-old contractor and a 38-year-old working behind their parked van. They were in the neighborhood to complete a job for a homeowner.

The first gunman then runs towards the men and orders them to get on the ground. A second gunman appears and, while the first attacker keeps his gun pointed at one of the workers’ heads, he ransacks the victims’ truck, looking for valuables to steal.

Flooring installer Julio Varon said he was working nearby and could have been a victim himself.

“It happens to everybody, you know,” he said. “I mean, Chicago is getting worse and worse, you know, even the good neighborhoods aren’t bad. It’s everywhere. It’s not just the South Side, the North Side, it’s everywhere.”

Although the theft lasted only a few minutes, it left some residents of what they describe as a generally calm and peaceful neighborhood on edge.

“Unfortunately, they’ve gotten pretty emboldened lately. You can see they’ve started doing things during the day on a main street. They don’t care because they don’t really have any consequences anymore,” said resident Eric Honeywood-Burrel.

The two contractors were shaken but not injured.

According to neighbors, after the robbery, the two gunmen ran down the street and got into a waiting car. Some of the stolen property may have been found a few blocks away.

Chicago police are still investigating and said no one is currently in custody.
