Kmart customers furious after ‘shocking’ state of skirt after just one wash: ‘Super disappointed’

Several Kmart customers have been left deeply disappointed after learning that a much-loved children’s item of clothing had been ruined after just one wash. Steph Wight, the daughter’s mother, said she was “extremely upset” after the skirt was “totally destroyed”.

The Victorian mother said Yahoo Lifestyle she followed the recommended care instructions, which state that machine washing on cold with like colors is best. Even so, the results were not ideal.

“I turned it inside out and did a cold delicate wash,” Wight said.

The budget retailer’s $10 printed skirt is made from jersey fabric and comes in a range of colors, including a metallic print.

After washing, the skirt was completely discoloured and had become a washed out white. Wight didn’t use anything unusual in her wash, just the usual Omo washing pods she usually uses.

“I was a little shocked when I saw that it was almost a white skirt. My daughter is very disappointed because she had wanted it for a while,” she said.

When Wight posted her disappointment on Facebook, several other moms reported the same issue with the skirt after the first wash. The only way to avoid complete fading seems to be to hand wash the cotton and spandex printed skirt.

“Ours did the exact same thing! Just one cold wash,” one person wrote, while another person said: “Ours did the same thing!! I actually use Aldi liquid, and it’s stripped.”

“We have this skirt and I hand washed it… it doesn’t say hand wash on the tags so bring it back and get your money back!” another person said.

“I’ve found that every Kmart garment I’ve bought with metallic embellishments does this no matter how I wash them,” added another.

But it seems the problem isn’t just with Kmart clothing, with others suggesting the issue lies in the type of material.

“This happens with metallic prints, even from well-known brands. It’s a risk you take today when you buy a metallic garment that, if you wash it, will probably lose its metallic finish. It’s a known problem with this type of fabric, but they continue to sell it,” one person said.

SHOP:

Wight said she managed to return the skirt for store credit after not keeping her receipt, but received no explanation from Kmart upon returning it.

“I know it’s not the Kmart employee’s personal fault, but an apology would have been appreciated,” she said.
