Wimbledon is an inspiration for Coco Gauff | Tennis News

LONDON: Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon gown, which is making waves in the fashion charts, might be giving off Serena vibes, but the 20-year-old has confirmed that the legendary superstar is not the inspiration for the look.

Gauff, whose dress – backless and cut-out detailing at the waist – is similar to the outfit Serena Williams wore in 2019 when she reached the final here, but that’s where it ends.

“Serena has worn every iconic outfit in the game, so you can have something that’s inspired by her, unintentionally. It was similar to my Australian Open outfit this year. Some people thought it was inspired by her, which it wasn’t,” the world number two said.

Gauff, who dyed part of her hair blonde, a shade Williams often flirts with, followed a trend.

“Serena is such an icon that everyone can take inspiration from her, she’s the original,” Gauff said. “I’m not going to sit here and lie to you and say, ‘Yeah, we took that picture and we wanted to do that.’”

Gauff thanked New Balance for designing her dress.

“I told them I wanted to play with cutouts because there’s not much you can do with white. I never really design anything. I don’t draw anything. I tell them what I want and they present it in a nice way.”

Gauff, who claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni on Wednesday to advance to the third round, said her outfit was inspired by SW19.

“I love wearing crop tops. This cut is meant to look like a crop top, in the elegant Wimbledon style, I consider Wimbledon a tradition,” she said. “Even for my nails, I always go for French or white nails here just to match that elegance. That was the inspiration.”

“The only thing you can really do here is play with texture,” Gauff said, given the white rule at Wimbledon. “Maybe next year I’ll try to add more texture to it.”
