Lana Del Rey is back with a new country-inspired song

After her triumphant concert at Coachella, Lana Del Rey is back as she promised with a new album with country influences. Among the most popular projects of Beyoncé, Diplo and Orville Peck’s collaboration with Kylie Minogue, country is definitely in fashion. But like the others, Lana also makes country with a touch of originality.

As People reports, Lana’s new song, “Tough,” features rapper Quavo and mixes hip-hop with her folk side.

Lana has been teasing the track to her fans for weeks and even performed it live. Now, its release is accompanied by a rustic visual to set the mood.

“Tough as the scuff on an old pair of leather boots / Like the blue collar attitude and the red dirt / Like a brass .38 / Hard as the stuff in your grandpa’s glass,” Lana sings, breathless as usual.

The visual theme seems to depict the two as a couple in love, armed and against the world, trying to escape their past, and the song’s lyrics further advance this theme.

“Tell me how hard it is for you / Like a nickel on strings and your good old Gibson guitar,” the song goes. “Like the songs your mother sings to you / And the way she makes you tell the truth / If you come from where you come from, then you were born tough.”

In the footage, Lana and Quavo even come close to kissing — and judging by that chemistry, we can only imagine what the couple has in store for the music video.

Produced by Andrew Watt and Cirkut and co-written by Clayton Johnson, “Tough” is Lana and Quavo’s first collaboration, and is another example of the music industry turning to country, according to what Lana hinted at at the Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards.

“If you haven’t noticed by now from our honorees and our artists, the music industry is moving toward country,” Lana told the crowd at the event. “We’re moving toward country. It’s happening. That’s why Jack has followed me to Muscle Shoals in Nashville, Mississippi for the last four years.”

In a conversation with NME about the industry’s shift towards country, she added: “Oh my God, what can I say now? When I presented Jack Antonoff with his producer of the year award[at the 2024 Grammys]I said, ‘Welcome Nashville to Hollywood and Hollywood, welcome to Nashville,’ because the music industry has gone, has gone towards country.”

According to Lana, the title of her project should be called “Lasso.” And fans can now get a sneak peek of what’s in store below.
