KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating the birth of a new female Masai giraffe.

The zoo said the calf was born on Sunday, June 30, weighs 125 pounds and is already 5 feet, 6 inches tall.

A neonatal examination showed that the calf is healthy and bonding with its mother Makali.

The zoo said the new calf was the second calf for 12-year-old Makali. Her first calf, Maxwell, was born in 2018 and left the zoo in 2020 under a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.

The zoo said it will be some time before the new calf makes its public debut, but it will keep people updated. the zoo’s social media pages.
