City of Richmond Announces Westover Hill Bike Path Project

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The City of Richmond is improving community mobility by expanding transportation options north and south of the James River.

On July 2, officials announced a bike path project along Westover Hills Boulevard, Park Drive and Blanton Avenue. The project focuses on modernizing streets and providing important connections to the city’s bike network, expanding accessibility and improving pedestrian safety.

Richmond resident Whit Clements said he and his daughter Holland enjoy biking together and the project is a great way to keep cyclists safe.

“This will allow people on Westover Hills Boulevard to park in front of their homes instead of on the side streets,” Clements said. “It will allow cyclists to be a little bit more separated from traffic and you will see an increase in the number of cyclists.”

Holland echoed those thoughts.

“A lot of people don’t like to ride on those roads because it’s a lot more dangerous,” Holland said. “But if there are bike lanes, a lot of people like to ride on those lanes because it’s a way for cars to not get to you.”

The first phase of the project will begin at Westover Hills Boulevard, near Riverside Drive, to Dunston Avenue and 49th Street. The second phase will begin at Park Drive and Blanton Avenue, from Pump House Drive to French Street.

Construction is expected to be completed by this fall.
