Echo Director Talks That Supernatural Opening Scene and How the Choctaw Nation Inspired It

Marvel’s Echo is finally here! The series starring Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, is not only the MCU’s first binge-watching series, but also the first to have an adult rating. While Echo was widely touted as taking place in a darker neighborhood down the street, the latest Marvel TV series opened on a rather supernatural front. When CinemaBlend spoke with Echo’s director and producer Sydney FreelandShe shared with us why she chose to open the show the way she did. Echo opens with a group of natives emerging from magical pools. One woman decides to drink the water from one of the pools, causing a bird to appear in front of her and fly away. Suddenly, the group’s house begins to shake furiously before they are transported to a new place, blooming with greenery and under the gaze of the sun. Their clay forms begin to melt to reveal their human forms. The three-minute sequence leads into the origin story of young Maya. What was it about?
