Results of the 2010 parliamentary elections without an absolute majority

The Conservative Party led by David Cameron won the most seats in parliament but fell short of an absolute majority, ousting the Labour Party in power since 1997. Britain has its first coalition government since 1945, after Cameron agreed to work with the centrist Liberal Democrats.

2014 Scottish Referendum

In a referendum that threatened to split the United Kingdom, Scotland voted 55% to 45% against independence, a victory for Cameron and the main national political parties over the Scottish National Party.

2016: UK votes for Brexit, Cameron resigns

The British shock the world by voting 52% to 48% to leave the EU, ending more than 40 years of union and plunging the country into its biggest political crisis since World War II. Cameron resigns and the party chooses Theresa May as his successor.

The 2017 early election gamble backfires

Leading in the polls and seeking a larger majority in Parliament to pass the Brexit bill, Theresa May calls a snap election. The Conservatives lose their majority and form a government by striking a deal with the pro-British Northern Ireland Democratic Unionist Party.

Brexit deal 2020

Boris Johnson uses his mandate to push a Brexit deal through Parliament and Brussels, and Britain leaves the EU on January 31, 2020, becoming the first state to withdraw from the bloc.

2022: Truss’ chaotic reign

Liz Truss beats Rishi Sunak in the race to succeed Johnson. Her “mini-budget” of unfunded tax cuts spooks financial markets, drives up borrowing costs and further tarnishes Britain’s reputation for political and fiscal stability. She lasts just 44 days in office before announcing her resignation.

Oct 2022: Sunak becomes Prime Minister

Sunak becomes the third British prime minister in as many months, pledging to restore stability to the government. In February 2023, Sunak strikes a deal with the EU on trade rules for Northern Ireland, improving ties with the bloc.

May 2024 – Sunak calls election

With Labour trailing Labour by around 20 points in the polls, Sunak called an election for July 4. Labour, led by Keir Starmer, won the election.
