The EU has long spoken out about unfair competition from China. After a nine-month investigation, Brussels announced additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, finding that the cars have benefited heavily from “unfair subsidies,” posing a threat to electric vehicle producers in Europe. Beijing has accused the EU of “blatant protectionism” that it says will damage relations and undermine global efforts on climate change. Seeking to “de-risk” China, the EU is focusing on strengthening its own auto industries as it transitions to greener energy.
