Excerpts from our conversation:

Anushree Parekh

Kaia is a journey into the heart of summer. Could you tell us more about it?

Kaia means the sea. For me, Kaia is literally a sartorial version of summer and the sea. From its light and airy colours to its silhouettes, it’s a perfect summer evening. Summer in India is all about comfort. From your holiday outfits to your summer weddings, the perfect outfit is a mix of freshness and comfort. That’s what Kaia is all about. From our easy coordinates to our summers lehengasFresh prints and luxurious fabrics make it extremely easy to carry.

As it is inspired by the sea, what designs and motifs did you use?

We used shades of aqua blue and green; the wave patterns and our seaside embroidery are a strong inspiration for Kaia.

Nature never fails to inspire, but how do you continue to incorporate different aspects of nature or reinvent similar aspects/elements into your collections?

This is the beauty of nature! Every minute, a new perspective and inspiration presents itself to you. It could be the sound of the ocean or the lush green forest. In my collection Kaiayou can see elements of nature in our bead and thread hand embroidery, our shells on straps and tassels, abstract shapes and patterns on prints and hand embroidery – all of this gives you a glimpse of the beautiful sea life.

How would you say this collection is different from your previous collections and how?

I wouldn’t say it’s different. But there’s a new perspective on my signature styles. Along with our festive Indian looks, we’ve added more modern Indian silhouettes like bodycon, bralettes and corsets. Keeping in mind our unique language, we’ve added elements of current SS24 trends.

What fabrics did you use for Kaiaand what does the color palette look like?

The colors used for Kaia are ivories, peaches, aquas and greens. The fabrics used are soft silks, georgettes and linens — all summer-appropriate and super easy to wear.

What silhouettes can we find in this collection?

Lots! From your crop tops to skirts, trendy sets, fusion pieces and many maxi dresses.

What would be your next collection?

I have started working on my festive line. It is inspired by my favourite era, the Mughal era, but the collection will have a modern twist.

With each collection, a designer evolves. How did your journey go?

Not only have I learned and grown with each collection, but I learn something new every day and try to apply that as much as possible in my work. Over the years, my business has grown from selling in Mumbai to countries all over the world, which has taught me how to design for different markets. My work is more rooted in India and more detailed in terms of embroidery.
