Andrew McCutchen’s ‘Furries’ Tweet Explained: Why Pirates Outfielder Celebrates Anthrocon With Annual Post

The Athlete’s X (formerly Twitter) accounts are often a random collection of thoughts and reflections. Andrew McCutchen certainly contributes, but every June he comes back with the same message.

McCutchen tweeted “FURRIES” Wednesday night, with nothing else in the message. There was no follow-up and nothing preceded the message.

For those unfamiliar with McCutchen’s annual tradition, it might seem a little odd to tweet just one word: “Furries.” But there’s an explanation for why he’s sending this message.

Here’s what you need to know.

Andrew McCutchen’s ‘Furries’ Tweet Explained

McCutchen has tweeted the same word several times over the past few years, and there’s a reason behind the “Furries” message.

McCutchen sends that message when Anthrocon, one of the world’s largest furry conventions, takes place in Pittsburgh each year, according to MLB.com.

“The power of furries,” McCutchen said, according to MLB.com. “The power of Anthrocon. Something about it, I guess. … I can’t explain it, man. It’s awesome. The weekend’s not over. Keep it up.”

The arrival of Anthrocon coincided with improved hitting from McCutchen. Prior to Anthrocon in 2023, McCutchen had posted an impressive .419/.479/.742 average with three home runs in 73 plate appearances at PNC Park when the convention was in town, according to Foolish Baseball via MLB.com.

McCutchen explained that he knew his numbers were coming out at Anthrocon, calling it “ridiculous” that someone “took time out of their day” to uncover the statistics.

“The fact that they put time into this idea is unreal,” McCutchen said, according to MLB.com. “It has some weight to it, I guess.”

What are “furries”?

According to MLB.com, “Furries” are people who are interested in anthropomorphized animals (animals with human characteristics). The Anthrocon convention is where members of the “furry” community gather to dress up as their anthropomorphized “fursona.”

Furries have certainly embraced McCutchen and his annual message, with one furry attending the 2024 convention wearing a McCutchen jersey.
