McDonald’s in the US to offer new Japanese-inspired garlic sauce

McDonald’s is set to launch its first garlic sauce in the United States, but only for McDonald’s app users.

Fast food restaurant to launch special grade garlic sauce in partnership with anime Jujutsu Kaisen On Tuesday, July 9, McDonald’s announced that the limited-edition condiment is inspired by the black garlic sauce sold at McDonald’s restaurants in Japan.

The sauce will contain “notes of garlic and soy sauce, balanced by a slight tangy sweetness.”

For fans of the anime, which was released in 2020, the sauce containers will feature eight different lid designs featuring popular characters from the series: Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, Satoru Gojo, Kento Nanami, Suguru Geto, Mahito, and Sukuna.

The special-grade garlic sauce will only be available on the McDonald’s app. Each purchase will unlock a 30-day free trial of the anime streaming service Crunchyroll, for eligible subscribers.

McDonald’s shared the news on social media earlier this week with a poster promoting the new sauce. “I’ll show you what real jujutsu is,” the brand wrote in the caption.

The upcoming product follows the fast-food joint’s limited-edition launch of the Grandma McFlurry in May. The treat combined “delicious syrup” and crunchy candy pieces — “just like Grandma’s favorite treat she hid in her purse!” — with vanilla soft-serve ice cream, the brand said.

In March, McDonald’s opened the latest restaurant in its new beverage chain, CosMc’s, in Dallas. The new chain is a standalone outlet where customers can get both familiar McDonald’s products and new menu offerings, including complementary items like boba pops, flavored syrups, energy shots and vitamin C shots.

The first location opened in Bolingbrook, Illinois, in December.

This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has caught the attention of anime fans.

Earlier this year, the brand’s iconic golden arches were temporarily flipped to form a “W” for manga-inspired packaging in more than 30 global markets.

At the time, the restaurant launched a dipping sauce called Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce, which the fast food chain said reflected the “bold and dynamic spirit” of classic anime heroes.
