Millions of people are heading to the polls to vote in a highly anticipated general election that could shake up British politics. Polls show the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, on course for a landslide victory, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

Polls predict a historic defeat for the Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, with 82 seats predicted. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn, an independent candidate in Islington North, could win a surprise victory despite losing the Labour Party whip position in 2020, according to a poll conducted by a British media outlet.

Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is running for re-election as an independent, posted a photo of himself voting in his north London constituency on Thursday.

Corbyn, a socialist who has won his seat for Labour in every general election since 1983, was suspended from the party and banned from running for Labour after his leadership faced allegations of anti-Semitism.

He became deeply unpopular after Labour suffered its worst defeat since 1935 in 2019.

Keir Starmer was chosen as leader to replace Corbyn and he has rebuilt the party and moved it closer to the centre. Pollsters and politicians expect Labour to win the most seats.

Corbyn posted a picture of himself on social media site X, his right thumbs up, saying: “I just voted for the independent candidate in Islington North. I hear he’s doing well.”

The election sees several parties competing for power, including the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, the Scottish National Party and the Green Party, each with their own leader.
