A woman left a casino this week in anger after the company told her the $43 million she had just won was invalid and instead offered her a steak dinner.

Katrina Bookman won what could have been the largest slot machine prize in US history, $42,949,672, while playing slots at Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York. She thought her life had changed forever, so she took a selfie with the screen. However, when Bookman returned to the casino the next day to get an “official ruling” on how much money she would receive, she was informed that she had not won anything.

It turned out that the slot machine she was using had a malfunction, resulting in a meager $2.25 win. The machine had a warning that “malfunctions void all payouts and plays,” so the casino was only obligated to refund her the $2.35 she had actually won.

In an act of kindness, Resorts World offered her a free steak dinner along with change, which was small comfort considering the amount she expected to receive.

“After being notified of the situation, casino staff were able to determine that the number displayed on the penny slot was the result of an obvious malfunction – a fact later confirmed by the New York State Gaming Commission,” Resorts World spokesman Dan Bank told CNN after the incident.
