Airport Sensory Rooms: Sensory Room

Perth Airport is set to introduce a new sensory room to its T1 international terminal. The initiative aims to improve accessibility and the travel experience for neurodivergent people. The move is in response to the recognised stress that travel can pose for people with diverse sensory needs.

Key features of the Sensory Room include designated seating areas for small groups, two private areas, sensory-seeking accessories, device charging stations, small storage areas and soft, soothing furniture in carefully chosen colours. A flight information display screen will also provide uninterrupted boarding updates, ensuring travellers stay informed.

Designed by Plus Architecture and planned for construction by Hoskins Contracting, the sensory room is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The initiative has been welcomed by Disability Services Minister Don Punch, who highlighted its importance in providing a calming refuge for the approximately 1 in 100 Australians living with autism. The initiative is part of WA’s National Disability Strategy, which is promoting greater inclusion through collaborative efforts with businesses and communities.
