Hillsborough MP injured by driver during traffic stop, MPs say

A Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured Friday when a driver struck him during a traffic stop in New Tampa, deputies said.

Deputy Sheriff Kalin Hall attempted to stop a black BMW on Bearss Avenue near Nebraska Avenue around 12:05 a.m., but the driver sped away, according to a news release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

About 20 minutes later, Hall tried to stop the BMW again on Plantation Oaks Drive in Tampa Palms. When Hall got out of his patrol car, the driver of the BMW hit him and fled, cops said.

Hall, 33, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with a fractured leg. He was in stable condition and was scheduled for surgery Friday.

Officers found the abandoned BMW about a mile from where Hall was struck. Investigators identified the car’s owner, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office released body camera video of the two attempted traffic stops. During the second stop, the BMW can be seen hitting Hall as he gets out of his car. Hall can be heard calling for help on his radio.

“He crushed me!” Hall said. “I need help from 10 to 18. My leg is broken!”

Deputies asked anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff’s office at 813-247-8200.

Hall has worked at the sheriff’s office for 11 years.

“This suspect’s actions have no regard for human life, choosing to ram a deputy without considering that his reckless actions could have a tragic impact on the deputy’s life,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement included in the news release.
