Amik Robertson has a strong message for anyone who would fire him

It’s no coincidence that Amik Roberton has emerged as a key player in the Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive secondary during a coaching change over his last two seasons. He started 12 games last year, playing primarily as an outside corner after splitting his time between the outside and the slot in 2022.

The Lions signed Robertson in the first week of free agency in March as they began rebuilding their cornerback depth chart. He quickly made it clear what he would bring to his new team, which was confirmed by Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce’s words late last season.

“He’s probably one of the most physical defenders out there,” Pierce said. “You see him always hitting the ball, making tackles. I don’t want to call it a little man complex, but he walks like he’s 6’2, 200 pounds sometimes, and he’s not afraid of anything. He’s a smart football player. He’s confident, and I’m glad he’s finally having success on the field.”

Lions head coach Dan Campbell had similar comments about Robertson (via SI.com).

“The first thing was his competitive spirit,” Campbell said: “You just said it, I don’t care if he’s inside or outside, this guy is competitive. He’s a feisty, competitive, demanding cornerback who has the versatility to play inside and outside. That’s what we’re always going to like.”

The Lions will have plenty of competition for starting jobs and defensive secondary roles during training camp. There seems to be a tendency to view Robertson as a mere “depth player” with no chance of earning a significant role. Regardless, while that sentiment is there (a few mentions on social media can be enough to elicit a reaction), Robertson has had enough.

“Dude, you need to bury that depth player. Lol. Stop playing with me… you’ll see. Keep the same energy.”

The range of outcomes for Robertson’s playing time this season is wide, from a starter to a true “depth player” who falls by the wayside barring injury. But he’s done with any feelings that point to the negative side of this situation, as expected.
