BNS was implemented without discussion, cannot be considered a welcome change: Amartya Sen

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Saturday said he did not consider the replacement of the CPI with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as a “welcome change” as it was done without holding a broad discussion involving all stakeholders.

Speaking to reporters in Santiniketan, Sen said in-depth discussions were needed before enacting new laws.

“There is no evidence that such broad discussions were held prior to the implementation of this measure with all stakeholders. Moreover, in this vast country, the problems faced by a state like Manipur and another state, say Madhya Pradesh, cannot be the same,” he said.

“Any initiative to bring about such a change with the help of the majority without any discussion with all the parties concerned cannot be called a welcome change, a good change which bodes well for me,” he added.

Sen was also asked about the results of the Lok Sabha elections.

Festive offer

“The election results show that this kind of politics (Hindutva) has been thwarted to some extent,” he said. The economist said the main factor behind unemployment in the country was neglect of education and health sectors.

He said he did not find anything unique in the “New Education Policy 2020”.

“There is not much new in the new education policy,” he added.
