Prepare for hot and humid weather in New York this weekend with a chance of rain

It will be a hot and humid weekend, with intermittent showers that could turn into thunderstorms throughout the weekend, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.

The soup and storms start Friday until things dry out around Sunday, forecasters said.

Additionally, for anyone enjoying the weekend in the Rockaways or Long Island, the service has issued a high-risk rip current warning, stretching from New York City to Suffolk County from Friday through Saturday night.

“It’s dangerous to go in the water,” meteorologist Joe Pollina said. “To stay safe, it’s best to stay out of the water or swim where the flags are or near a lifeguard.”

Meteorologist David Stark said the likely rainy weather doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire weekend indoors.

“It doesn’t look like a complete collapse during the day by any means,” Stark said. “It’s just something to watch for, especially if there are any outdoor activities planned.”

Temperatures are expected to reach 80 degrees and rain is expected to ease by midday Sunday.

The state Department of Environmental Protection issued an air quality warning for New York City on Friday, possibly due to the lingering effects of fireworks.

With an air quality index of around 150, the city’s health department recommends limiting outdoor activities to one hour or less.
