Premature baby kept alive in sandwich bag after mother’s silent labor

An incredible photo has emerged of a premature baby being kept alive by being wrapped in a plastic sandwich bag with suction before being transferred to an incubator.

Isaac Derwent was born ten weeks early at Derriford Hospital in the UK, weighing just 1.7 kilograms.

Much to his mother’s confusion, doctors wrapped him in the sandwich bag after he was born.

Her mother, Jennifer, 32, from Devon, England, went into labour after feeling a slight stomach pain while shopping, which she thought was harmless.

But her husband Jonathan, 38, who gave birth to the couple’s first child at home, took her to hospital because he had a premonition she was going into labour.

He has made a full recovery.

“Right after he was born, Isaac was placed in a plastic bag and doctors said the idea behind this was to regulate his body temperature,” his mother said.

“It was quite shocking to give birth to a child and the first thing that happened was you put your baby in a sandwich bag.

“We have a picture of him on it, and I’m sure we can all laugh about it when he’s older.

“But it kept him warm and helped him get better.”

“We can’t fault the care we received – the hospital was fantastic to us,” Jennifer said.

“I was so relieved when I heard him cry – it was an incredible moment.”

Ms Derwent, a psychology professor, had gone out to buy a toy box when she felt a pain in her stomach.

In 2013, her husband spent 40 minutes delivering their first child before paramedics arrived.
