Two minors arrested while trying to enter vehicles

SOUTHINGTON — Two juveniles are accused of trying to break into several vehicles along Laning Street Friday morning, police said.

During the investigation, police discovered that the juveniles had attempted to break into or entered four vehicles in the area. One of the vehicles had a broken side window, police said.

Police said they were called to the area of ​​Laning Street around 5:20 a.m. Friday morning for a report of motor vehicle burglaries in progress. Officers canvassed the area and heard voices, discovering two suspects in the process of burglarizing vehicles, police said in a news release Friday.

When officers showed up, the two suspects — both juveniles — attempted to flee and began running toward Interstate 84, police said. Southington police officers pursued the suspects and quickly apprehended one. They then set up a perimeter and found the second suspect hiding in a wooded area, police said.

Police said a juvenile was found with a screwdriver and believe the tool was used to try to break into vehicles in the area.

The two juveniles were charged with two counts of attempted third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary and one count of obstructing an officer, police said. One of the juveniles was also charged with possession of burglary tools, police said.

Police issued each a summons and the juveniles are scheduled to appear in court on July 11, one in state Superior Court in Waterbury and the other in state Superior Court in New Haven. Both juveniles have been released to their respective guardians, police said.
