It’s one of Albuquerque’s most infamous stories. “Boneyard” co-writer Vincent McDaniel said his film, starring big names like Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, loosely follows the true story of the West Mesa murders, when police found the buried bodies of 11 women in West Mesa in 2009. “We’re here to help the families get closure and hopefully we can find the golden clue to help solve this case,” McDaniel said at Friday night’s premiere.

Eleanor Griego is the mother of Julie Nieto, one of the murdered women. She hopes the film will finally lead to the killer. “To find closure so we can move on with our lives. Right now, I don’t trust anyone. I’m always looking back and wanting this to end.”

The film’s director said that a documentary is also in the works, which will further detail the true events. “We are really trying to tell the real story now. The film ‘Boneyard’ has made the world audience aware of this case and other cases and now they will be able to see the real story in the documentary that is being produced,” said the film’s director Asif Akbar.

Families of some of the victims at Friday night’s premiere said they hope the story will remind them to never stop searching for answers. “Not only will it bring more awareness, but it will also help bring more information about who my mother is as an individual,” said Skyler Romero-Cruz, Veronica Romero’s daughter.

Boneyard can be watched on streaming services.
