Hamilton ‘can’t stop crying’ after winning British Grand Prix

Mercedes Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton is back on the top step of the podium.

The 39-year-old Briton won his home race, the British Grand Prix, at Silverstone on Sunday, ending a 945-day victory drought, courtesy of The Athletic’s Madeline Coleman. It was his first win since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s victory was clearly emotional. He was seen hugging his father after getting out of his car. In an interview with Sky Sports after the race, he said: “I can’t stop crying.”

Hamilton will leave the Silver Arrows for Ferrari in 2025. According to CNN’s Issy Ronald, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff told Sky Sports that winning another British Grand Prix with the seven-time world champion seemed like a “fairytale”.

Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell looked set to take his second consecutive win after taking pole on Saturday. However, Hamilton passed him on lap 18 and they pulled away on the following lap.

Things were to get worse for Russell, who was forced to retire on lap 34 due to a potential water system problem in his car. Hamilton took over first place after McLaren’s Lando Norris missed a pit stop. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen made a late comeback, but Hamilton held on to the lead for the rest of the race.

The hard-earned victory should remind fans that Hamilton is still one of the greatest drivers of all time despite his recent struggles.

According to ESPN F1’s X-Count, he has won nine races at Silverstone, breaking Michael Schumacher’s record for most wins at a single circuit. He is also the first driver to win in F1 after competing in 300 races.
