Los Angeles Chargers should consider signing two former All-Pro players

The Los Angeles Chargers are less than three weeks away from the opening of training camp for the 2024 season, but several roster moves will still be made before the season begins.

The Chargers have a new head coach and a solid group of key players, but a few positions could still use a little more depth. Looking at both sides of the ball, another veteran presence at receiver and cornerback wouldn’t hurt.

The list of available free agents is not exhaustive, and players who are still on the market and have not yet been signed have not been offered a contract for whatever reason. The Chargers will also want to take a look at what they have in training camp and perhaps even some preseason games before considering bringing in another outside source.

But if the Chargers are considering looking outside the organization, there are a few players who could be interesting to sign.

Los Angeles Chargers Should Consider Stephon Gilmore, Michael Thomas

Stephon Gilmore, cornerback

Stephon Gilmore is 33 and has played for a different team each of the last three seasons, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys. But the former first-round pick has had a stellar career, including five Pro Bowl appearances, two first-team All-Pros and the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.

There’s no doubt that Gilmore’s best days are behind him and he’s probably lost some ground. But he’s still solid in coverage and can provide the kind of experience a young defender is looking for.

In many ways, he’s a better signing than Kristian Fulton, who the team signed in March. Fulton is eight years younger, but Gilmore’s experience and proven ability still give him the edge.

Michael Thomas, receiver

Many analysts believe the Chargers didn’t do enough to improve the receiver position this offseason after losing Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

The team is ready to move forward with Josh Palmer, Quentin Johnston, DJ Chark and several rookies.

Michael Thomas has struggled to stay on the field in recent years and most teams probably won’t be interested in his name. But if he can be close to what he was before, he could be a stable target for Justin Herbert and worth paying attention to.
