BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Hoss Mack announces his retirement after serving as sheriff for 17 years.

In a letter to deputies, Sheriff Mack said he has accepted an offer to become the executive director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association in Montgomery.

In his letter, Mack explained that it was not an easy decision to make, but that he felt “the time has come to make this decision. This is a great opportunity for me to work with all 67 sheriffs in Alabama.”

Sheriff Mack joined the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in 1989 as a criminal investigator.

He was first elected Baldwin County Sheriff in 2006 and is currently serving his fifth term.

He says he plans to retire in late summer or early fall.

If necessary, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey will appoint a temporary sheriff to serve until the November election.
