Delta flight makes emergency stop at JFK after bizarre incident with food on board

A Delta Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing in New York after passengers were served a “spoiled” in-flight meal.

Flight 136 departed Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport for Amsterdam on Tuesday evening, but was diverted to JFK Airport after the “tainted” food was discovered.

According to data from tracking site FlightRadar24, the Delta plane was flying over Saint Pierre and Miquelon – a French archipelago south of Newfoundland in Canada – when it turned around.

The Airbus A330 landed safely at JFK at 4 a.m. on July 3 and was met by medics to treat the affected passengers.

It is currently unclear how many of the 277 passengers on board consumed spoiled meals and whether any passengers developed symptoms of food poisoning.

One affected passenger, Virginia, wrote on Twitter/X: “@delta I need to know how you are going to get me to Amsterdam today. I am on the plane that is making an emergency landing at JFK because you served passengers “contaminated” food. I don’t need hotel/food vouchers, I need to get to Amsterdam today.”

A Delta Airlines spokesperson said in a statement: “Delta Flight 136 from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York’s JFK Airport early Wednesday morning following reports that a portion of the main cabin meal service had been disrupted.

“Medical teams have been dispatched to the aircraft to treat the affected passengers and crew members. Delta’s Food Safety Team has instructed our suppliers to immediately isolate the product and begin a thorough investigation into the incident.

“This is not the service Delta is known for, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay to their travels.”

The airline says it is “currently working on the situation” and will provide further information later today.
