Rail communications between Rajshahi and the rest of the country remained suspended as a group of Rajshahi University students blocked railway tracks near the university’s central cemetery on Monday demanding the quashing of the High Court order that restored 30 percent quota for children and grandchildren of freedom fighters in government jobs.

Eyewitnesses said that the students blocked the railway tracks under the overbridge of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology around 11:30 am and staged a sit-in to press their demand till the filing of this report around 1:10 pm.

Abdul Karim, Rajshahi railway station manager, told New Age that due to the students’ strike, the Dhumketu intercity express train was stranded at Haryana railway station while the Kapotakkha express train was stranded at Sardah Road railway station.

He said they feared a train schedule disaster if students did not leave the tracks immediately.
