Elon Musk once again denies Model Y refresh rumors, urges fans to stop speculating for fear of hurting Tesla sales – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)

Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk On Sunday, rumors that a refreshed Model Y would launch this year were denied.

What happened: “There is no new Model Y this year,” Musk wrote on X after images of a wrapped black Model Y began circulating on social media as a possible prototype of a revamped version of the SUV.

The CEO also urged Tesla fans to stop implying that there is a new version, saying that news of a refreshed Model Y will hurt sales of the current version. The Tesla fan to whom Musk responded later deleted the post.

Elon Musk has previously denied rumors of a refreshed Model Y. “There will be no ‘refreshed’ Model Y coming out this year. I have to emphasize that Tesla is continually improving its cars, so even a car that’s six months newer will be a little bit better,” Musk said in June.

Why is this important: The Model Y is Tesla’s best-selling car. Rumors of a refreshed Model Y began after Tesla introduced a redesigned version of its other mainstream offering — the Model 3 — earlier this year in the United States.

Rumors of a refreshed version of the old vehicle come amid concerns about Tesla’s aging lineup and declining sales. Tesla delivered 443,956 vehicles globally in the second quarter, down 4.8% from a year ago but still ahead of consensus estimates.

Model 3 and Model Y represent the vast majority of Tesla’s global deliveries. In the second quarter, Tesla delivered 422,405 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, representing 95% of the company’s overall global deliveries.

Other Tesla vehicles currently in production include the Model X, Model S, and Cybertruck, all at the high end of the electric vehicle price spectrum.

Price action: Tesla shares closed up 2.1% at $251.52 on Friday. The stock is up 1.25% year-to-date, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
