People Shocked After Video Shows What Speaking English Is Like To Foreigners

Have you ever wondered what it’s like for non-native speakers when you’re on vacation and speaking English?

There are probably a few languages you don’t speak that you could easily recognize if you heard them.

You may have no idea what they’re talking about, but you’re convinced they’re speaking French, Spanish, German, etc.

But what surprised people was that people who don’t speak English still recognize the language and a video blew everyone away by highlighting what it sounds like to them.

TikToker the Language Simp – or @languagesimp – speaks multiple languages, including English, so I’d say he’s in the perfect position to reveal how we speak to non-English speakers.

You can listen to it here:

And would you believe it, it seems like we talk a lot like the characters in The Sims, weird, right?

In a clip that has since been viewed more than eight million times, he shares a short speech – if you can call it that – in bizarre gibberish that sounds a lot like English but makes absolutely no sense.

The effect is a little strange for those of us who speak English, with one social media user commenting: “I felt like I had to understand what he was saying.”

While another asked: “Are you telling me people hear me talking like a Sim?”

“I feel like I understand what he’s saying, but at the same time I don’t,” added a third.

Another TikTok user pointed out: “That sounds right… but it’s not…”

“For some reason I keep trying to understand what he’s saying and I realize he’s literally speaking gibberish and not English,” wrote a fifth.

A sixth revealed: “No reason, if you don’t pay attention to what he says it literally seems normal.”

“That’s what I hear when I dissociate,” someone else joked.

Many people were inspired by the TikTok video to try to become bilingual, with one saying: “This is why I’m learning another language.”

Many were left perplexed by the video (@languagesimp/TikTok)

And one spectator almost hit the nail on the head.

They wrote: “It’s like hearing a conversation from the outside: you know what language they’re speaking, but you can’t actually tell what they’re saying.”

One last TikTok user added: “My reasoning, in trying to understand what you actually said, has been derailed.”

Even.

Ask your non-native English speakers and see what they think.

Maybe Language Simp has hit the nail on the head… or maybe he’s just talking nonsense.
