Braves DFA JP Martinez, making room for Eddie Rosario

According to Francys Romero, the Braves are designating outfielder JP Martinez for assignment.

While no official trade has been announced for the Braves, the move is expected to make room for Eddie Rosario, who recently signed a minor league contract with the club and spent the weekend playing for the Gwinnett Stripers. In three games, he had three hits, including a triple and a home run.

Eddie Rosario’s journey has been rocky since he helped the Braves reach the World Series in 2021, earning him a two-year deal to return to Atlanta. He was nearly unplayable in 2022 due to vision issues, causing him to miss much of the season, and while he was useful in 2023, it wasn’t enough for the Braves to bring him back, leading him to sign a contract with the Nationals.

In Washington, Rosario was abysmal, hitting just .183 with seven homers in 67 games. He was eventually designated for assignment and released by the Nationals, allowing the Braves, who desperately needed outfield help, to pick him up.

Eddie Rosario can’t be expected to play every day for the rest of the season and solve all of Atlanta’s problems, but he’s an inconsistent hitter who has the potential to go nuclear. Maybe he can give the Braves enough to get them to the trade deadline, where they can make other meaningful acquisitions as they prepare for the final stretch.
