Altoona replaces 10th Avenue Southeast roundabout with four-way stop

Altoona replaces 10th Avenue Southeast roundabout with four-way stop

Altoona City Getting Rid of Roundabout

Crews began work Monday to remove the roundabout at the intersection of 10th Avenue Southeast and 15th Street Southeast, according to a news release. The small roundabout is in a residential area near Falcon Ridge Park.

The roundabout needs repairs and the city will instead replace it with a four-way stop to improve vehicle flow and at the request of residents, the statement said.

“This small roundabout is being removed because it was in frequent need of repair and was difficult for large vehicles to navigate,” the city said in a Facebook thread about the project. “Other roundabouts in the city are larger and do not have the same level of repair or traffic issues as this one. Roundabouts in general are often incorporated into intersections because they allow for more traffic flow.”

Crews will work to maintain one lane of traffic to keep the intersection open during the project, which is expected to last several weeks, weather permitting. There may be traffic delays during the work.
