51 flights cancelled, 27 diverted at Mumbai airport; train services also affected | India News

City records heaviest single-day rainfall in July since 2019

At least 27 flights were diverted and 51 services were cancelled at Mumbai airport on Monday after heavy rains lashed the city, sources said.

Rainwater flooded roads and railways, disrupting rail services and forcing the closure of schools and colleges.

Mumbai city recorded 101.8 mm of rainfall in nine hours on Monday, nearly seven times more than its suburbs during the same period, the weather office said.

The Santacruz weather station recorded 27 centimetres (10.6 inches) of rainfall in the 24-hour period that ended at 8:30 a.m. Monday, the heaviest rainfall for a single day in July since 2019, according to the India Meteorological Department.

“Heavy rains and low visibility led to suspension of runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am on Monday,” a source said, adding that 27 flights were diverted to cities like Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Indore.

“Currently, priority is given to arrivals, departures are delayed and significant changes are being made to accommodate diverted flights,” another source said.

Currently, Mumbai airport handles around 870 scheduled flights daily, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Flightaware.com said a total of 306 flights (departures and arrivals) were delayed at Mumbai airport on Tuesday. Around 42 IndiGo flights, six Air India flights, two Alliance Air flights and one Qatar Airways flight were cancelled at Mumbai airport till 11 am on Monday, sources said.

The Qatar Airways flight was cancelled as the crew had exceeded their flight duty time limits (FDTL), they added.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), run by the Adani Group, which runs the Mumbai airport, said it has arranged additional seats and water for passengers affected by the “inclement weather”. The airport has also deployed staff at the terminals to support passengers and provide them with necessary assistance, it added.

“We ask passengers to contact their respective airlines and check schedules before arriving at the airport. The safety and well-being of our passengers, employees and partners remains our top priority,” he said.

“There is a lot of traffic on the roads and railway lines have also been affected,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on X.

Floods in UP

Water release from dams in Uttarakhand and widespread rains in river catchment areas have triggered severe floods in several districts of Terai region and plains of Uttar Pradesh, an official report said on Monday.

Many villages in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur, Kushinagar, Balrampur, Shravasti and Gond districts have been hit by floods. Isolated incidents of lightning have killed 12 people in Bihar, a state government official said.
