‘I was pretty shocked’: Q Street retaining wall collapses into neighbor’s backyard

OMAHA, Nebraska (KMTV) — A retaining wall near 120th and Q Streets has been taking over Justin Weberg’s yard for the past two months. It came down the night of May 4.

“I was pretty shocked,” Weberg said.

The only thing that has changed in the past two months is a temporary barricade installed by the city of Omaha to separate the wall from the backyard.

“I think it’s created an eyesore for neighbors on both sides,” Weberg said. “You have guests coming over and it gets people talking, but at the same time it’s annoying because you can hear Q St.”

Weberg, who couldn’t enjoy his entire yard, said he wasn’t frustrated in early May because the city had other priorities, like helping tornado survivors. But now he’s waiting for answers months later.

KMTV has learned that it typically takes the city 18 months to repair a retaining wall from start to finish. But in this case, the process is being expedited because it is an emergency.

Although the last few months have been frustrating for Weberg, he looks forward to the days when he can have a backyard without an unobstructed view of Q St.

“You know you want your garden to go back to normal, right? I wish it was a little quieter here, so we could enjoy the terrace and the nice evenings,” he said.

KMTV also learned that the city will perform full restoration repairs to the affected area of Weberg’s backyard at no cost to him.

The design of the retaining wall will be completed by the end of the month or mid-August. As for when the wall will be completely built, it will still take a few months.
