Wimbledon 2024: Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend caught in Alexander Zverev furor rages

Wimbledon 2024: Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend caught in Alexander Zverev furor rages

There was a lot of drama in Wimbledon Monday evening, with Taylor Fritz’s girlfriend Fritz was caught up in controversy in his win over Alexander Zverev. He came from two sets down to win 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 6-3 and advance to the quarter-finals, which saw Zverev through.

The German was in a very bad mood after the match and had a long conversation with Fritz at the net. Zverev had been upset by the behaviour of someone in Fritz’s box during the match – and that person appeared to be the American’s girlfriend, Morgan Riddle.

Fritz told reporters after the match that Zverev had complained that someone was “being too crazy” in his box. “I think he was a little upset that my team members were cheering for me when he was injured,” Fritz said. “But he said it had nothing to do with him, that everything was fine.”

Zverev admitted his anger was directed at someone “outside the tennis world” – comments widely interpreted as aimed at Riddle. “His team is extremely respectful. I think his coach, his physio and his second coach are extremely respectful,” Zverev said.

“I think there are other people in the stands who are not part of the tennis world, who don’t particularly watch every match. They exaggerated a little bit.”

Riddle fired back at Zverev after the match with several social media posts that have since been deleted. One was captioned “Cheer hard for the girls,” while the second read “When your man wins for the girls.”

Riddle’s reference to “ladies” and “girls” seems to be a blatant attack on Zverev on domestic violence allegations Zverev reached an out-of-court settlement with ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea last month, with no ruling on his guilt or innocence being made. Zverev has denied all the accusations against him, including those made by another former partner.

“It’s no big deal. No problem. No drama,” Zverev added. “He fought back from two sets down, so obviously they’re all excited, very motivated, yeah. But no problem with Taylor. I think Taylor’s a great guy. I have absolutely no problem with him.”

Fritz said he didn’t hear any comments from him while he was on the court. “At the net, it’s no big deal,” he said. “I think he felt like he was limping a little bit in some games, towards the end of the fifth at least. I think he was annoyed that some of the people in my box were loud and cheering for me.

“It was incredible to do that on Centre Court, two sets down in front of that crowd. It’s a dream. The thing is, I still felt like I was playing well despite being two sets down. I just thought it sucked to play that well and lose in straight sets.”

Zverev wore a bandage on his left knee and said he was “on one leg today” due to an injury he suffered in his third-round win over Cameron Norrie. “It’s nothing that needs surgery,” he added. “It’s nothing that won’t heal on its own. It just takes time.”
