Why was The Incredible Dr. Pol cancelled?

National Geographic The Incredible Dr. Pol was canceled after 24 seasons on air.

The “incredible” Dr. Jan Pol has been a fixture on American television sets since 2011, when his hit reality series Nat Geo Wild followed him and the goings-on at his rural Michigan veterinary clinic.

Pol and his wife, Diane, have been caring for animals together for nearly 50 years, and do so on television as part of the main series Dr. Pol and the recently launched spin-off The incredible Pol farm.

Why was The Incredible Dr. Pol cancelled?

After 13 years and 24 seasons, The Incredible Dr. Pol has been canceled, leaving many people wondering why the hit reality show was ultimately axed.

National Geographic confirmed that the series would end on June 21 (according to What’s on Disney Plus), and its finale aired on the channel on July 6.

As part of the cancellation, it was also confirmed that the final season of the series would arrive on Disney+ and Hulu in the US later this year, on October 1.

No specific reason has been given for the cancellation of the Nat Geo Wild show; however, it might have something to do with the Pol family themselves and their other recently introduced series, The incredible Pol farm.

When asked if the new spin-off series replaces The Incredible Dr. PolDr. Jan Pol (aka the show’s incredible namesake) revealed that he loved doing both shows and — at least at the time of blogging — he seemed to think his original series would continue (via TheDrPol.com):

Q: Is it a replacement for The Incredible Dr. Pol?

A: “No, no, no. I love doing the show because what we hear from people is how they learn to care for animals. It’s so important!”

As The Incredible Dr. Pol is now finished and The incredible Pol farm continued, it appears that the show was cancelled some time after these comments, especially given how confident Pol seemed to be about continuing both shows.

That doesn’t mean the 81-year-old has any plans to slow down, though.

According to the beloved TV veteran, there’s even more content outside The incredible Pol farm.

Following the announcement of his show’s cancellation, Pol took to Instagram to praise the series that made his name known:

“After an incredible 13-year journey, our beloved television show, “The Incredible Dr. Pol,” is coming to an end on Nat Geo Wild. It’s been an incredible ride, and we’re so grateful for all the support and love you’ve shown our family over the years. But… it’s not goodbye yet! Doc and Charles continue to develop new content and products just for you. We’ll continue to share our adventures with the world and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

In his touching message, the TV vet teased “more interesting content” of the Pol family, which could hint at another spin-off outside of the current project The incredible Pol farm series:

“Thank you for being a part of this incredible adventure. Your enthusiasm made every moment worth it. Stay tuned for more great content, and in the meantime, check out “The Incredible Dr. Pol” and our new series “The Incredible Pol Farm,” streaming worldwide on Disney+!”
